I am going to be a little negative here. I am not trying to discourage you from breastfeeding. I am going to tell you the truth.
I promise you that I will always tell you the truth.
I am not going to sugar coat stuff for you. You are a big girl and you have a right to know what your are getting yourself into by choosing to breastfeed.
The truth is that often, breastfeeding is really, really hard.
But isn’t it natural? Haven’t women been doing this for thousands of years?
Sure! Shoot, Jesus was breastfed. BUT, that doesn’t mean it has been easy for all those women. In fact, for thousands of years and even today in some parts of the world, babies die because their moms don’t make enough milk.
Women have been giving birth for thousands of years too, but nobody is going around telling you that birth is easy. Can we agree upon that? Birth is really really hard work and it is sometimes really really dangerous?
So, why are you being told that breastfeeding is “easy” and “natural?” Because “they” want you to breastfeed. Breastfeeding is the healthiest thing for you and for your baby and we need to convince every mother to do it, so we lie to you.
Yup. We, healthcare providers lie. Your mother lies (or she forgets, which is totally possible). The internet lies and public health publications lie.
Breastfeeding and being a new mother is really hard. So is eating healthy, so is exercising, so is earning a college degree, so is being married.
But, make the choice to do it anyway.
Acknowledge that this is going to be the hardest and most rewarding this you will ever do in your life. THEN DO IT.
BUT, before you go and just do it, remember this:
